Former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat has been summoned to Delhi on Sunday by Congress general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal amid concerns within the party over his recent political activities in the state.

Rawat, who recently recovered from an illness and returned to Uttarakhand, has stepped up his political outreach and undertaken individual yatras, drawing the attention of the Congress leadership ahead of the state Assembly elections.

According to sources, Venugopal is understood to have asked Rawat to maintain unity and work under the party’s organisational framework rather than pursuing political programmes independently.

The Congress leadership is learnt to have expressed displeasure over Rawat’s recent activities, which party leaders feel could undermine the organisation’s coordinated preparations for the Uttarakhand polls.

Rawat’s recent yatra also led to a public spat with Congress MLA Qazi Nizamuddin during his passage through Manglaur. Nizamuddin is also the party’s in-charge for Delhi.

The development comes after Uttarakhand Congress in-charge Kumari Selja had earlier written to Rawat asking him to stop his yatra. She had raised concerns that the programme was becoming too individualistic and could hurt the party’s calibrated efforts ahead of the Assembly elections.

Rawat’s meeting with Venugopal in Delhi is believed to have focused on maintaining party unity and coordinating his political activities with the Congress’s broader electoral strategy in Uttarakhand.
