Matildas star Mary Fowler has withdrawn from Australia’s upcoming matches against Germany and Haiti for “personal” reasons.

Football Australia announced on Tuesday that Manchester City’s Fowler had been replaced in the squad by former Melbourne City midfielder Leah Davidson, who joined Charlton Athletic in July.

“Mary Fowler has been withdrawn from the October international window due to personal circumstances,” an FA statement said.

“The decision was made following discussions between Fowler, Manchester City and Matildas staff.”

Fowler came on as a second-half substitute in City’s 4-2 English Women’s Super League weekend win over Arsenal. It was her 100th appearance for City.

As part of their ongoing preparations for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup, the Matildas meet Germany in Karlsruhe on Saturday morning (AEDT) before travelling to France to take on Haiti next Wednesday (AEDT).

Matildas coach Joe Montemurro said: “It’s going to be a great opportunity for us to see whether the work we’re doing is going to be consistent.

“We’re missing some important players, but I see that more as a positive for us.

“It’s a really good test to see whether the work we’ve done can continue our process.

“We’re approaching it from the point of view that we’ve stabilised the way we want to play and we’ve stabilised the ideas that we think are our base.

“What we need to do now is start to introduce a couple of other things that we could be challenged with in the (World Cup).”
