The O.C. creator Josh Schwartz “hated” Adam Brody when he auditioned for the hit show.

The 46-year-old actor landed his breakout role as Seth Cohen in the beloved teen drama from 2003 to 2007, but after seeing the star’s audition, the show’s writer was beyond unimpressed.

Speaking in E!’s Greatest Year in Pop Culture documentary focused on 2003, Josh recalled: “After he was done, I was like, ‘Who is that guy?’

“He didn’t even bother with one line of dialogue. Get him out of here.”

Casting director Patrick Rush was keen on getting Adam in the cast, but he admitted there were “some speed bumps along the way in the auditioning process”.

He noted that things “didn’t go well”, particularly as Adam left the casting team disappointed from the get to.

He explained: “He didn’t even read for Seth. He ad-libbed and riffed. That’s when the sweat starts. I’m kind of looking at him like, ‘What are you doing? Please don’t do that.’”

Patrick described Josh as “the most even-keeled guy in history”, but he can still remember his furious reaction to Adam’s audition.

He said: “Josh Schwartz, who was the most even-keeled guy in history, said, ‘I hate that kid. I never want to see him again’.

“I just, for some reason, was like ‘I don’t know what that was but please let me bring him in again.’ He came back and he was great.”

By the time Adam was brought back for a second audition, Josh had already agreed on the casting of Mischa Barton (Marissa Cooper), Ben McKenzie (Ryan Atwood) and Rachel Bilson (Summer Roberts).

A far cry from the actor’s first test, he passed the second round with flying colours.

Josh said: “The character all of a sudden made sense, and any fear that the network had, like are girls going to find him equally as crushable I guess you could say as Ryan, instantly went out the window.”

There have been public calls for a revival of The O.C., with Ben and Rachel both being open to the idea.

However, Adam previously pushed back because he believes that “socially, I think we’re in a different place”.

On the Welcome to The O.C., B******! podcast back in 2021, he added: “I feel like The O.C., while it claims to be in a similar sense of Gossip Girl, while it would sort of say it’s a critique [of affluence], it’s not.

“It’s a celebration. It’s a celebration of affluence, in my opinion.”
