Harry Hoekstra has shone with bat and ball in his Sheffield Shield debut, snaring dropped Test opener Jake Weatherald for a duck.

The Victorian left-arm quick first top-scored with 45 at No.9, leading the home side’s rearguard fightback as they reached 244 on Wednesday at Junction Oval after losing the toss against South Australia.

Then he opened the bowling and had Weatherald caught behind for a sixth-ball duck.

SA were 1-4 at stumps, with Henry Hunt and Mackenzie Harvey at the crease.

The rematch of last season’s Shield final started much as that game had ended, with the SA attack making short work of the Victorian top order.

Highly rated No.4 Ollie Peake had made 32 before he left a ball just before lunch and was bowled by Henry Thornton, who also claimed the wicket of Matt Short for 31.

The hosts slumped to 7-162 before Hoekstra, who made his Victorian debut in a one-dayer last month, led the late-innings rally.

No.10 Doug Warren also contributed 20 runs.

Hoekstra was the last wicket to fall, caught in the deep by Weatherald off Brendan Doggett.

Thornton (3-51) and Doggett (3-56) took three wickets apiece.
