Nick Reiner stared towards prosecutors during his latest court appearance as a judge considered whether evidence presented to the grand jury that indicted him over the deaths of his parents should be made public.

The 33-year-old appeared at Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday (07.10.26) as he faces two counts of murder over the deaths of his father, actor-director Rob Reiner, 78, and mother, photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner, 70. Nick has pleaded not guilty to all charges and remains in custody without bail.

The charges are allegations and he is presumed innocent unless proved guilty.

According to Page Six, Nick was not handcuffed to his chair during Wednesday’s hearing, unlike at previous appearances, although each of his hands remained cuffed.

The publication reported he sat beside his public defender Kimberly Greene and whispered to her before proceedings began.

Nick was seen tilting his head from side to side and looking towards prosecutors several times during the hearing.

He wore a brown shirt over a white long-sleeved thermal top with brown trousers, while his hair had grown out from earlier appearances and he had facial stubble.

The hearing focused on whether grand jury transcripts and exhibits connected to Nick’s indictment should be released publicly.

Judge Sam Ohta did not rule on the matter and continued proceedings until 21 October, when arguments over the records are due to continue.

A grand jury returned an indictment on 20 July and it was unsealed in August.

Nick pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder with special-circumstance allegations of multiple murders and murder by means of lying in wait.

Prosecutors have also alleged he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon – a knife.

Rob and Michele were found dead at their Brentwood home in Los Angeles on 14 December 2025.

The Los Angeles County medical examiner recorded the cause of death for both as multiple sharp-force injuries and classified their deaths as homicides.

Prosecutors allege Nick fatally stabbed his parents before leaving their home.

He was arrested later that evening and has remained in custody without bail.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced last month prosecutors would not seek the death penalty.

Nick therefore faces a maximum sentence of life in state prison without the possibility of parole if convicted as charged.

His siblings Jake Reiner, 35, and Romy Reiner, 28, have remained involved in issues surrounding the criminal proceedings and have supported keeping the grand jury material sealed. People reported that their position was intended to avoid further trauma caused by publication of the evidence.

The case has also brought renewed attention to Being Charlie, the 2015 semi-autobiographical drama Nick co-wrote with Matt Elisofon.

The film, directed by Rob, drew on Nick’s experiences with drug addiction and follows a young man struggling with substance abuse and rehabilitation.

Rob had one of Hollywood’s most recognisable careers as both an actor and director.

He first became famous playing Michael “Meathead” Stivic in the sitcom All in the Family before moving behind the camera.

His directing credits included This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, Misery and A Few Good Men.

Nick marked his 33rd birthday in custody in September and appeared in court the following day, when he confirmed that he understood he was waiving his right to a speedy trial.

Mr Hochman has said he does not expect his client’s trial to begin before 2027 as Nick’s defence continues reviewing evidence in the case.
