Hi-definition AI cameras hit a northern suburbs main drag this past week.

The cameras set on a trailer were deployed on Shenton Avenue, Connolly, from September 30 to October 6 to catch motorists speeding, touching their mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.

There are 10 “safety camera trailers” deployed, including four in the metropolitan area, and two each in the Great Southern, South West and Mid West regions.

A State Government spokesperson said the cameras aimed to change driver behaviour.

“Along with targeted education and awareness campaigns, community engagement and infrastructure improvements, safety cameras form part of the State’s long-term strategy to change driver behaviour and save lives on WA roads,” the spokesperson said.

“Every seatbelt not worn or worn incorrectly, every mobile phone used behind the wheel and every kilometre over the speed limit creates an unnecessary risk and puts lives in danger.

“Camera deployment locations are guided by crash data and advice from the WA Police Force and Main Roads Western Australia to ensure a wide spread of geographical deterrence.

“Drivers can be part of the solution to save lives on our roads, by slowing down, putting their phone away, and wearing a seatbelt correctly.”

Data from the Shenton Avenue cameras is not yet available.
