Odisha woman says she killed husband to end years of domestic abuse, arrested

A woman has allegedly confessed to killing her husband while he was asleep following a domestic dispute in Malapatna village in Odisha’s Kendrapara district. Police have taken the woman, identified as Manorama, into custody and are investigating the alleged involvement of the couple’s two children.

The deceased, Niranjan Sahu, was found dead under suspicious circumstances on Thursday morning. Neighbours reportedly found his body lying outside the house and alerted the police.

According to preliminary information, Niranjan returned home late on Wednesday night after consuming alcohol and went to sleep. Manorama allegedly told police that she pressed her foot against his neck while he was asleep, leading to his death.

During questioning, Manorama reportedly claimed that her husband had been addicted to alcohol and frequently assaulted her and their children when intoxicated. She alleged that the abuse had continued for 10 to 15 years.

Manorama also reportedly told investigators that she worked washing utensils at a hotel to support and care for her two children. She claimed that she had previously lodged a complaint against Niranjan, following which he was arrested and spent three months in jail before being released on bail.

According to police, Manorama allegedly told investigators that she believed killing her husband would bring an end to the abuse. She also claimed that their son and minor daughter had helped her in the killing. Police are investigating the children’s alleged involvement, and their individual roles have not yet been established.

Aali police reached the village after receiving information about the death and began an investigation. A scientific team was also called to examine the scene.

Police are probing the circumstances surrounding Niranjan’s death, the events inside the house before it occurred, and the allegations against each family member. The exact cause of death and the sequence of events are yet to be established.
