As the news of the death spread, an angry mob gathered outside the girl’s house and allegedly attacked police personnel and ambulance staff.
The incident left several cops injured. The driver of the ambulance, which had arrived to transport the body, said he was attacked by the mob and his vehicle was vandalised.
He said he was forced to flee from the scene to save his life.
Given the sensitivity of the matter and the growing tension, local ACP Rajiv Kumar reached the spot with a heavy police deployment and brought the situation under control.
The senior police official said the agitated crowd had assaulted police personnel and vandalised the ambulance.
He said a case had been registered, and an investigation was under way. Strict legal action would be taken on the basis of the evidence gathered, he added.
