Germany win a corner now but it’s delivered straight into the side netting.

The Matildas make a quadruple substitution – a rare decision from Montemurro. The veterans Kerr, Catley, Van Egmond come off, joined by Amy Sayer.

In their places, Courtney Nevin, Alana Murphy, Holly McNamara and Leticia McKenna come on.

Australia 1-2 Germany, 64 minutes

Australia win a corner kick for the first time in the match and it’s delivered by Van Egmond, but it goes out for another corner. Kerr and Nusken are laughing again when told off by the referee for too much tussling before the ball is delivered.

The second delivery lands perfectly for Wheeler who strikes with her right foot and in some incredible last ditch defending, a huddle of German defenders keep the ball from crossing the goal line after it rebounds off the crossbar. That was so close to being an equaliser and Wheeler looks disappointed.

This half is starting much the same way the first did, with both sides feeling out the opening minutes and neither really dominating.

Besides Kossler who is an outlier. She managed to get another shot on target from Kossler again but Arnold saved it in the bottom-right corner. Kossler was found off-side minutes later before she was able to make another attempt.

Welcome back from the break. Germany have made a triple substitution replacing Buhl with Lisa Baym, Brand with Linda Dallmann and Kett with Marie Muller.

They’ve got one back! I’ll admit, I didn’t see that coming with such few opportunities made in this half. But it’s a tried and tested partnership which nails it for Australia as Carpenter makes a cross to the centre of the box from the right side of the pitch and finds Kerr’s head.

Mahmutovic jumps to try save it but she’s not even close.

That’ll be it for this half.

Kerr is back up after a break in play and will continue on for the Matildas. Germany win a corner kick but don’t capitalise on the opportunity. Australia will no doubt be looking forward to half-time as two minutes will be added on to the end of this half.

Australia 0-2 Germany, 43 minutes

Kett taunts Arnold into diving for a shot that hits the side netting as Germany keep up the pressure.

It’s been an uninspiring first half for the Matildas so far with insult added to injury as Sam Kerr stays down after contact with Nusken on her right ankle.

She doesn’t get back up afterwards and the ball eventually goes out of play so she can receive treatment on the pitch.

Australia 0-2 Germany, 38 minutes

Caitlin Foord seemed to give some reprieve to Australian fans after getting the side’s first shot in 20 minutes. But instead, Kossler gets a brace, striding solo up the pitch and striking with her right foot from outside the box.

Arnold dives and doesn’t get there in time. That could have been saved.

They almost get a third straight after but the off-side whistle blows instead.
