An Australian trekker, last seen close to a month ago on a remote South American hiking trail, has been found dead, his family and friends have confirmed.

Jordan Yap, was last heard from on September 14 ahead of a planned 10-day solo trek along Peru’s Huayhuash mountain range, 400km northeast of Lima.

The 30-year-old was last seen near the beginning of his trek across the Cordillera Huayhuash circuit, which is regarded as a challenging, high-altitude trek through the remote Andes mountains.

In an update on a social media page set up to help with search efforts, his family and friends confirmed he had been found and did not survive.

“We want to thank everyone who has helped; friends and family, the contributors, the search teams, the police and many groups we engaged with who gave their time and effort,” the update said.

“Please remember Jordan as the vibrant man he was and for the immense joy he brought to so many people’s lives.”

Local mountain rescue organisation Socorro Andino Peruano had been hired by Mr Yap’s family to help with the search.

Mr Yap had been planning his Peru trek for more than a year and had recently bought a GPS watch to allow for offline maps to guide him on the hike.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has been contacted for comment.
