Adam Pearson thinks that the film industry is “moving forwards” in terms of disability representation.

The 41-year-old star, who suffers from facial tumours as a result of the genetic condition neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), feels that the success of disabled performers such as Ruth Madeley highlights the progress that has been made – but stressed that there is still “a fair way to go”.

Speaking to BANG Showbiz at the premiere of Zero Intention of Living Quietly – a documentary from filmmaker Edward Lovelace which sees him mentor teenager Ellie Jim (who also lives with NF1), at the BFI London Film Festival on Sunday (11.10.26), Adam said: “It’s certainly getting better but the more disabled actors, writers and people in general we have in the industry the better it gets.

“Certainly, since I was a kid it’s come on leaps and bounds. The more kind of Ellie Jim’s, the more Ruth Madeley’s in Being Heumann. The more people like her in the industry, not only who are advocating, but are also damn good actors in their own right.

“There’s a fair way to go, but we’re moving forwards – one step at a time, one step at a time.”

Meanwhile, Adam also revealed that he would tell his younger self that everything “will be OK”.

The Under the Skin star said: “Advice to my younger self is always a hard one to answer, partly because my mind goes through this sort of Back to the Future idea, ‘That will change everything.’

“I would probably tell my younger self that it will all be OK, this gets easier, this gets better.”

Adam previously shared the screen with Hollywood star Sebastian Stan in the acclaimed 2024 movie A Different Man and has revealed that he would be open to working with Julianne Moore in the future, as he was a big fan of her performance in recent movie The Debut.

He said: “She’s just done a really good performance in The Debut, I would love to work with Julianne Moore. She’s phenomenally talented.”

Pearson also revealed that he would be keen to work with Adam Sandler because he shares a “juvenile sense of humour” with the Happy Gilmore star.

He said: “I’d love to work with Adam Sandler. I grew up on Adam Sandler films and I’ve got that really similar juvenile sense of humour.

“Sandler’s a weird one because he’ll do Grown Ups, Grown Ups 2, all those kinds of films and then every now and again he’ll do something like Uncut Gems and remind the world that he’s a really good actor.”
