Cranston, who played Walter White, shared a lengthy Instagram post recalling how Mitte joined the show as a teenager and grew into a fine actor.
“I’m in deep despair as I write this tonight. RJ Mitte, my sweet son on Breaking Bad has died (sic),” Cranston wrote. He recalled meeting Mitte when he was just 14 and watching him approach the role with “joy and enthusiasm.” Cranston also praised his determination, saying that although Mitte was born with cerebral palsy, he never allowed the condition to become an excuse.
“He was one of the stars of a hit TV show – but still a kid,” Cranston wrote, remembering the young actor’s growth from the show’s pilot in 2007 to a performer who became a vocal advocate for disability representation.
Cranston also revealed that the two had been texting just weeks earlier to arrange lunch. He wrote, “I don’t know if that lunch would have changed his future. But I do know that I loved him (sic),” he wrote, ending his tribute with, “I’ll miss you, son.”

RJ Mitte’s legacy beyond Breaking Bad
Mitte played Walter White Jr. throughout the series’ five-season run from 2008 to 2013. He later became a disability rights advocate, using his own experience with cerebral palsy to push for greater inclusion in the entertainment industry.
Earlier this month, Mitte appeared on The Joe Vulpis Podcast, where he spoke fondly of Cranston and Anna Gunn, praising their experience and recalling how the set remained light-hearted between takes despite the show’s dark themes.
