Jason Momoa isn’t “really an actor” and acting isn’t his “cup of tea”.
The Aquaman star insisted he “fell into” his profession and he’s much happier up on stage playing bass with his band Öof Tatatá than hanging out on a film set.
Asked if he prefers a film set or a rock concert, he quickly replied: “Rock concert.”
He added on the At The Bar podcast: “I’m not really an actor. I’m just kinda like… well, I’m not a rockstar either…
“I’m a f****** hustler, baby. I don’t really know as far as acting. You know what I mean? Like, acting’s very… There’s so many people I respect as actors, and I just feel like I enjoy filmmaking.
“I enjoy probably writing and directing and producing, putting things together. I enjoy stories. I enjoy all that process.
“I think the acting’s probably not my cup of tea. Like, I’m not, like, dying to do theatre… I never seeked out to do that. I kind of fell into it.”
Jason – who has Lola, 19, and Nakoa-Wolf, 17, with ex-wife Lisa Bonet and is in a relationship with actress Adria Arjona – thinks it is “awesome” when fans get “excited” about seeing him, but he admitted he doesn’t want to be bothered when he’s with his partner or family.
He said: “It’s tough for me. Cause generally people are really, really excited and that’s awesome ’cause I get excited when I see my people that I really like.
“But if I’m out, I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I’m with someone I haven’t seen forever.’ Or with my kids right now – I know people just don’t give a s*** – I don’t get to see my kids that much. Like, if you pull my attention away from something, I’m like, ‘I’m sorry. No, this is not the right time.’ “
Jason acknowledged his refusal to pose for pictures at such times may make him “look like an a******” but he’d rather that than take time away from his kids.
He said: “People they get happy. And they don’t know what’s going on.
And most of the times I look like an a******, but at least I don’t look like an a****** because I’m not giving away my time to my children. Or if I’m out with my lady, it’s crazy ’cause guys are the ones!
“I’ll be with my lady, like, ‘Do you want to get a picture?’ I’m like, ‘Bro, I’m with my lady right now. You want to get the f**k away from me?’ I’m like Dude’. I’m literally, my arm around my lady like, ‘Go away’, and they’re just like, ‘I love you, man!’ I’m like ‘Get away, bro. You’re gonna get me killed.’
“But it’s weird because I still wanna be hanging out with everyone. And then it just turns into, like, a circus is in town. And I’d rather just hang out with everybody and drink at my favourite bar. So it’s like I still try to stay in those places and just hang out with everybody.”
The 47-year-old actor insisted he won’t be changing his lifestyle to avoid such awkward encounters.
He said: “But it comes with the f**king job. I mean, they’re not in the wrong and I’m not. I’m trying not to look like an a******, but you can’t please everyone.
“I’ll do it for a kid, try to do my best…
“I guess I don’t get into it with other celebrities, but some bigger celebrities, they don’t go out. And I just can’t f****** bear that.”
