Truth, beauty, freedom and love are returning to Australia.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical will dazzle Sydney audiences again, with new cast members stepping into the spotlight.
Rising star Erin Clare will take on the role of Satine, the sparkling diamond of the Moulin Rouge cabaret nightclub, with musical theatre talent Nigel Huckle as Christian, the idealistic young bohemian who falls in love with her.
Bringing the production back to the city where Baz Luhrmann’s revolutionary 2001 film starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor was made is a chance for the cast to honour the musical’s origins while putting their own stamp on the much-loved story.
“I’m excited to take on Satine while honouring Kidman’s legacy in the role,” Clare said.
She hopes to capture Satine’s “stoicism and strength”, bringing her own interpretation to the glamorous courtesan whose vulnerability lies beneath the surface.
Performing in her home city adds another layer of excitement for Clare, who said the production’s extravagant staging was an experience in itself.
“Whatever you’ve seen in this beautiful city, nothing really compares to walking into the theatre,” she said.
“It’s going to be hit after hit after hit.”
For Huckle, whose credits include Les Misérables and West Side Story, Moulin Rouge’s epic, high-energy jukebox score is a chance to showcase a different side of his vocal chops.
“This is the first modern pop performance I’ve done where I can show my vocals in this way,” he said.
The musical has travelled to stages around the world, from Europe to an upcoming production in China, building a devoted following along the way.
Huckle is looking forward to joining a show that has inspired extraordinary loyalty among audiences, with some fans returning to see it multiple times.
“Some people have seen it five, 10, even 35 times, and we’re looking forward to being a part of a show people love,” he said.
Drag artist and comedian Reuben Kaye steps into the flamboyant role of Harold Zidler, master of ceremonies at the legendary Paris nightclub the show is named after.
Having built a career on comedy and cabaret performances across Europe and Britain, Kaye is preparing to show audiences a different side of his talents.
Despite his stage experience, he knows taking on such an iconic role comes with its own set of pressures.
“If you’re not terrified, you’re in the wrong business,” he said.
“It’s about turning those nerves into excitement and bringing the audience along with you. I’ll be standing up there on solid knees – the strongest part of me.”
Kaye said the musical’s themes of freedom and love felt particularly important in an uncertain world, with its celebration of connection offering audiences a chance to escape.
“It’s a celebration, and we need that now,” he said.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical opens at Sydney Lyric Theatre in March 2027.
