Tinashe doesn’t chase external validation.

The 33-year-old singer – who released her new album, Popstar, in September – has revealed that she no longer seeks external validation.

She told Bustle: “I’d unsubscribed from it because I’ve never really had external validation in this type of way. I’ve never even sniffed the top 10 of a [major] Billboard chart. So that isn’t something that I even like to know, let alone be concerned with.

“I was surprised by the reaction, honestly. People are like, ‘Why are you surprised?!’ And I’m like, ‘Why wouldn’t I be surprised?’ The album doesn’t feel particularly different from a creative standpoint. I think the reception is the difference, which is exciting to say the least.”

Tinashe’s fans have vocalised their support for the singer through the #UpliftTinashe social media trend. And the singer appreciates their loyal support.

Tinashe said: “It’s so nice and wholesome.

“I think my fans have been ready to see this critical reception. A lot of them have been riding with me for a really long time, and they’re very, very passionate about their love for me. I think it felt very validating for them as a fan base as well. So it was really cute to see.”

Meanwhile, Tinashe previously admitted that she “didn’t feel supported” as a young musician.

The singer has been on a “rollercoaster” ride since signing her first-ever record deal and over time, she’s learned that she needs to “do it on [her] own”.

She told Face to Face with Becky G: “The next seven years after I signed that record deal, I went through a rollercoaster of success and then periods of stagnation.

“Periods where I wanted to release a project and maybe my label wasn’t on the same page and we had big creative differences.”

Tinashe actually lost confidence in herself at one stage, as she lacked support from people within the industry.

She said: “I didn’t feel supported in my art and that’s when I really felt that I started to lose that confidence myself as a creative, because I felt that I had to make compromises to work in this business model.”

Tinashe started to compromise bits of herself amid her self-doubts.

She explained: “When you’re working with a company and there’s so many people that you have to please, you start to make these little tiny compromises here and there.”
