Bavuma is at his gritty best this match and he’s simply refusing to go out despite Australia’s best attempts to dismiss him.

I do love watching him when he bats with this kind of mindsest.

Bavuma did play at a couple of wides balls last over but he has regained his composure and remained at the crease.

That’s his 27th 50 in Test matches – he’s on 51 from 140 balls.

Meanwhile, Jansen just hit Boland for six down the ground.

SA 6-146.

Jansen took 13 runs off Starc’s last over as he showed off his offside shots, including a flowing cover drive on one knee.

The Aussies won’t mind Big Marco playing his shots as he could just as easily catch an edge with his favoured shots.

Bavuma has also played a lovely straight drive in the last over.

Good sign, should the Aussies get to bat later today.

The ultra edge has earned the Aussies a wicket with Mulder caught.

Mitchell Starc has come on and made an immediate impact with his bouncer hitting Mulder’s gloves, then his helmet before flying to slip.

Ultra edge showed a clear spike near his gloves. Marco Jansen is now in.

That’s Starc’s 450th Test wicket.

SA 6-110 from 50 overs.

Mulder has been struck high and caught in the slips.

The umpire said not out but the Aussies have asked for the review.

Time will tell.

Cummins clearly two distinct plans for the two South African batters.

He’s offered Mulder the chance to play scoring shots and he is taking them; it led to Mulder driving and missing at a shot last over.

Bavuma is copping some short balls and bouncers but he has handled them so far.

Boland is just bowling his side perfect line and waiting for the batters to mess up.

It’s tough going today.

Proteas 5-108 from 47.4 overs.

Boland was straight back on the attack to open day three and he offered some teasing balls to Bavuma but the Proteas skipper avoided knicking them.

Mulder and Bavuma are in no hurry here. I reckon they know they have to eat as much time as they can.

Cummins is bowling from the other end and a couple of his deliveries moved around or even bounced a little low in that over.

Australian fast bowler Scott Boland says there is still enough time for his side to engineer a win.

The two sides have played just 43 overs in the first two days due to persistent rain, but conditions are forecast to improve in the next three days although rain could return late in today’s play.

Boland and his side want to bowl out South Africa as soon as they can today and begin building a score big enough to allow them to bowl out the Proteas before the end of day five.

“Yeah, there’s still going to be close to 300 overs in the game that’s left, so I think there’s still plenty of time,” Boland told Kayo Sports before play.

Gqeberha: Scott Boland admits he is racing against advancing years to make as big a mark as possible on Test cricket.

But the evidence suggests that Australia’s oldest fast bowler since Ray Lindwall in 1960 is actually improving with each opportunity, however sporadic, to the point that South Africa offered him the highest possible praise here.

In his first Test for Australia since January, 37-year-old Boland (4-31) has been the major reason why South Africa are again in a world of trouble at 5-97, clinging to hope that captain Temba Bavuma (41 not out) can make something of their wobbly first innings before the recalled Kagiso Rabada lets rip on a drying pitch.

Matt Renshaw’s stunning catch in the final half hour of play, which extended to 30.4 overs despite only beginning at 3.45pm on Monday local time (12.45am Tuesday AEDT), made the day Boland and Australia’s, after which the Indigenous paceman spoke frankly about how he had worked to try to ensure he could hit the ground sprinting whenever the selectors included him.

Australia were doubly grateful for Boland on a day when Josh Hazlewood was absent from the ground with a stomach ailment.

Gqeberha, South Africa: Scott Boland grabbed two more wickets for Australia and South Africa captain Temba Bavuma survived a second tricky day in the second cricket test at St. George’s Park on Monday.

By the end of day two, South Africa was 5-97, Bavuma was defiantly holding up one end with an unbeaten 41 from 108 balls, and Boland was running through the other end with 4-31 from 14 overs.

Rain then a soggy outfield wiped out the first two sessions — the teams delayed their arrival to the ground — but sunshine helped to restart play and a gritty 30.4 overs came about.

Bavuma and debutant Marques Ackerman resumed in the middle with South Africa 2-20 in 12.2 overs overnight and Ackerman was gone in the day’s third over, nicking Boland behind on 6.

Brilliant sunshine in Gqeberha and Josh Hazlewood is back with the team and fit to bowl.

However he won’t be able to do so for the first session, having been off for the whole of day two with a stomach ailment, which is considered the same as an internal injury per the playing conditions.

Play is set to start at 6.45pm AEDT as the teams attempt to make up for lost time in the first two days.
