Newlyweds Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna wanted their wedding to be about celebrating with their loved ones, not posing for cameras. The couple, who appeared together for the first time on Koffee with Karan Season 9, opened up about their romance, the proposal that preceded their wedding and why they enforced a strict no-phone policy at their February wedding in Udaipur.

Vijay revealed that he had initially considered proposing to Rashmika during a trip to Italy in December but could not find the right ring. A source exclusively shared with India Today that Vijay told host Karan Johar, “I didn’t want Rashmika not to have one [proposal story]. Before our marriage in February, so in December when we were in Italy, I felt like I didn’t want her to not have a proposal story just because I am not that kind. I wanted to do it in Italy but couldn’t find the right ring.”
He eventually proposed to her on the first day of their wedding celebrations in Udaipur, after the sangeet, with their friends present. Vijay said he wanted to ensure Rashmika had that special moment rather than miss out on a proposal story because of his own reservations about grand romantic gestures.
The couple also revealed why they wanted their wedding to be an intimate celebration, away from cameras and the pressure of posing for photographs. As a source exclusively shared with India Today, Vijay was particular about keeping cameras away from the celebrations, ensuring that the couple and their guests could be present in the moment without worrying about being photographed.
“One thing I was particular about was that I didn’t want any cameras around me… firstly nobody had phones,” he said, explaining how the absence of gadgets made the wedding more intimate. Rashmika agreed, adding, “It made it so much more fun.”
The couple also ensured that the team documenting their wedding did not interfere with their personal moments. Vijay revealed that the crew had been instructed not to direct them or ask them to pose for photographs during the celebrations.
“And the team who were shooting us also were instructed not to come in front of us and be like ‘Sir turn this way, that way’. I didn’t want to see anyone on stage other than my friends and family,” he mentioned.
For Vijay and Rashmika, the idea was to enjoy their wedding without the self-consciousness that comes with knowing cameras are constantly trained on them. They described the celebrations as one big holiday with family and friends, with everyone staying at the same property, eating, dancing and spending time together.
“If you didn’t feel watched… you didn’t feel conscious about anything, and you could be in it,” the couple said.
The actors will feature in the second episode of Koffee with Karan Season 9, on JioHotstar.
