The second coming is here as the Australian production of Tony Award-winning musical comedy The Book Of Mormon returns to Crown Theatre Perth.
After first greeting Perth audiences in 2019, the Mormons are back with a heavenly cast led by Sean Johnston as Elder Price and Nick Cox as Elder Cunningham.
Co-written by South Park’s Trey Parker and Matt Stone with Robert Lopez (Avenue Q, Frozen), the show follows two mismatched Mormon missionaries sent on a two-year mission to a place as far removed from Salt Lake City as possible.
“It’s the perfect satire, written by the kings of satire who I feel are like the Monty Python of today,” Cox said about the musical that premiered on Broadway in 2011.
“They walk that fine line of crude crass with comedy that is kind of ageless. It’s also got so much heart, and as the world is only getting crazier and crazier, it still feels so poignant and relevant.
“Avid musical theatre fans have an amazing time and it’s like a show with training wheels for people who haven’t seen a musical before . . . It’s kind of a unicorn show.”
Johnston said he and the rest of the cast were excited for the Perth season and the prospect of getting to explore the city and visit the beaches.

“Hearing how much of an impact and influence The Book Of Mormon’s had around the world, it feels incredible to be a part of this machine,” Melbourne-based Johnston said.
“The musical is so well written. There’s no dead air in the show, and it’s really one hit after another.”
The Book Of Mormon is at Crown Theatre Perth until December 6.
