ChatGPT-maker OpenAI is expanding its footprint. After years of fierce rivalry, the AI firm is bringing its popular artificial intelligence models to Google Cloud for developers to use. This is a major step. It shows OpenAI wants to reach more enterprise businesses and grow beyond just regular consumers.

Available on all top three cloud platforms

Earlier this year, in April, Microsoft’s exclusive hold over OpenAI’s technology came to an end. Right after that, Amazon started offering OpenAI models on its AWS cloud. Now, with Google Cloud jumping on board, OpenAI’s models are officially available on all three of the biggest cloud providers in the US.

In the coming weeks, Google Cloud users will get access to OpenAI’s powerful GPT products, like the new GPT-6 Astra and the Codex coding tool. These will be available inside Google’s Model Garden and its Antigravity coding platform.

Explaining the move, OpenAI said in a blog post, “Google Cloud’s longstanding investment in machine learning and AI has made it a destination for AI workloads and the developers and data scientists building them.”

Why this is good news for businesses

For companies, this makes life much easier. They can now buy OpenAI’s tech directly through the Google Cloud Marketplace using their existing cloud budgets. Also, they don’t have to move sensitive company data back and forth between different platforms just to use ChatGPT-like features.

Even though Google’s own Gemini AI is a direct rival to OpenAI, cloud companies are now trying to offer a variety of choices to their users instead of forcing them to lock into just one ecosystem.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said their focus is on giving customers a “broad selection of models, including those from OpenAI, so they can choose the right model for any given job, helping to deliver optimal quality and lower costs”.

However, OpenAI has made it clear that Microsoft is still its main cloud partner.

The bigger picture

Google’s cloud business is booming. In the second quarter of this year, its cloud revenue growth shot up to about 82%, compared to 63% in the first quarter. This was largely driven by a high demand for custom chips and AI models. In comparison, Amazon and Microsoft saw cloud growth of 37% and 42%, respectively, in the same period.

According to data from corporate card issuer Ramp, most businesses are currently spending their AI budgets on OpenAI and Anthropic. But Google is pushing hard too, having launched its next-generation Gemini 4 Argon model in September.

The history between Google and OpenAI is interesting. OpenAI started in 2015, partly to challenge Google’s dominance in AI research. Two years later, Google researchers published the famous “Transformer” academic paper that propelled modern AI. But it was OpenAI that helped bring the technology forward with ChatGPT. Last year, the two worked together briefly when OpenAI disclosed it was using Google’s infrastructure to run ChatGPT and its API.

OpenAI is currently rushing to secure a massive $30 billion investment to reach a staggering $1.4 trillion valuation. Why the sudden rush? Its biggest rival, Anthropic, is preparing for an Initial Public Offering (IPO).

Right now, the Google Cloud integration is in an invite-only preview phase for select customers doing internal testing, with a full public rollout expected very soon.
