Dame Judi Dench is unable to perform on stage or read because of an eye condition.
The 91-year-old actress was diagnosed with macular degeneration, a condition that affects her vision, in 2012, and Judi has now revealed that she can no longer read because of the problem.
During an appearance on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Judi shared: “I can’t be on stage. I can’t do a play any more. I can’t do a film any more. I can’t read any more.”
The acclaimed actress admitted that she often struggles to recognise people. But in spite of the issue, Judi doesn’t think too much about ageing.
The movie star said: “There’s nothing to say for it at all. [I] don’t think about [ageing] too much.”
Judi has enjoyed huge success on stage and screen during her career. And the actress has admitted to being “besotted” by Shakespeare’s sonnets.
Judi – who won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in 1998’s Shakespeare in Love – said: “I just love them.
“It’s the rhythm of it. It’s the rhythm of your heart. It’s the way he’s summed up so simply the way that any of us feel about, well, anything.”
Meanwhile, Judi recently described the Cats movie as a “waste of goodwill and talent”.
The acting icon admitted the 2019 film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary West End musical was a flop, but the star – who portrayed Old Deuteronomy in the film – has never seen the finished version.
Writing in her memoir, Is It Too Late to Make a Run For It?, she reflected: “Oh God, I can’t bear it – and [Lloyd Webber] had waited so long for it to be made.
“What a waste of all that goodwill and talent. I understand the critics were rather hostile to the film.
“I never saw the final cut so I can’t judge.”
However, Judi insisted the cast – who included Francesca Hayward, James Corden, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Sir Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson, and Ray Winstone – did their “best”.
She added: “All I’ll say is nobody sets out to give a poor performance or make a bad film.”
