Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi has accused the Himanta Biswa Sarma government of failing to deliver justice to singer Zubeen Garg, news agency Press Trust of India reported on Friday.
Gogoi alleged that the investigation into Garg’s death had been weakened and that the memorial dedicated to the singer remained incomplete even after a year.
After paying tribute to the late singer at Zubeen Kshetra, Gogoi told reporters that Chief Minister Sarma had informed the Assam Assembly that Garg was murdered in a premeditated manner and had described how the crime was carried out.

“However, the Special Investigation Team constituted by the chief minister submitted such a weak and unsubstantiated charge sheet that the accused persons are securing bail one after another,” Gogoi alleged, according to PTI. He also accused the state government of failing to challenge the bail orders in the Supreme Court.
The Gauhati High Court has granted bail to singer Amritprava Mahanta and suspended police officer Sandipan Garg in connection with the death case.
Gogoi said Congress leaders had visited Zubeen Kshetra to demand justice for the singer but were pained to find that construction of the memorial remained unfinished. “The BJP government frequently advertises its achievements, boasting about building flyovers and massive structures within remarkably short periods. Why, then, has it failed to complete Zubeen Kshetra over the past year?” he asked.
Paying tribute to Garg, Gogoi said the singer’s contributions to Assam’s art, culture, music and cinema would remain in people’s hearts. He alleged that the artist had not received fair treatment despite dedicating his talent to promoting Assamese culture while setting aside his personal comfort.
Gogoi also accused Sarma of a series of political failures over the past 10 to 12 years, citing his support for the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, unresolved border disputes with Mizoram, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, land allocations and alleged personal scandals.
“However, his greatest and most indelible failure will remain the injustice meted out to Zubeen Garg and the politics played in his name,” Gogoi alleged.
“We are not standing here merely as a political party or as party office-bearers; we stand united with the common people of Assam. We will always stand firmly by Zubeen Garg’s family and his millions of admirers and seek true justice for him and strict punishment for the culprits,” he said.
Gogoi reiterated that the Congress would continue to support Garg’s family and admirers, while demanding justice in the singer’s death case and the completion of his memorial.
