A-League star Sam Cosgrove has been fined and suspended for swearing at a journalist.

The Auckland FC striker has been banned for two games and fined $2000 by Football Australia after telling a New Zealand-based scribe that “we’ll just f*** you off, you won’t get back here again” after being unhappy with a line of questioning about another suspension Cosgrove was able to serve in New Zealand’s National League with Auckland’s reserves to ensure he didn’t miss the first two games of the new A-League season.

In being sanctioned under FA’s national code of conduct and ethics, Cosgrove “failed to uphold the expected standards of integrity, dignity and professionalism required of a professional player”.

One game of Cosgrove’s two-game been has been suspended, but will be activated if the 29-year-old Englishman breaches the code of conduct again during the 2026-27 A-League season.

Auckland has accepted the sanction and will not appeal the decision.

Cosgrove, last season’s joint winner of the A-League Golden Boot, will miss Auckland’s clash with Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.

The former Barnsley marksman will be available for selection for the Black Knights’ battle with Wellington Phoenix on November 7 at Go Media Stadium.
