As pleased as Rhys Youlley is to have scored his first A-League goal, the Sydney FC midfielder is more concerned with helping the Sky Blues keep clean sheets.

In his 25th A-League appearance, Youlley broke his A-League duck with a long-distance strike that got the better of Adelaide United goalkeeper Joshua Smits in Sydney’s 2-1 win over the Reds at Allianz Stadium.

“I back myself from outside the (penalty) area, so it’s good that finally one goes in,” Youlley said.

However, ahead of Sydney’s battle with Melbourne City at AAMI Park on Saturday, the Australian under-23 representative is more intent on helping keep the Victorian club scoreless in his “No.6” holding midfield role.

“I really want to help the team in any way I can, and especially in defence this year, I want to play a big part in helping the team keep clean sheets.

“As as ‘6’, you’re in between. Sometimes you’re with the defenders, and sometimes you’re with the attackers, but … something that we talked about in the pre-season was to be really solid at the back no matter how the game’s going, and not let too many people in.

“We just focus on ourselves and build on what we can do, and build on the team that we want to become.

“The main thing is that we stay grounded and focus on the weekend’s game. It wasn’t perfect (against Adelaide), so there’s always room to improve and grow.”

The Sydneysiders will on Saturday wear the club’s new Under Armour third kit, which is “dedicated” to the club’s active supporter group, The Cove.

The jersey is predominantly black with charcoal grey trimming, including silhouettes of The Cove in “full voice”.

Sydney FC captain Rhyan Grant said: “Win or lose, The Cove supporters are always showing up, and have never wavered in their support of us, bringing the noise that makes the atmosphere of every game we play.”

The club’s A-League women’s team will also wear the third kit on Saturday against Brisbane Roar at Gioca Stadium.
