A worker at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine has been killed by a drone attack, the International Atomic Energy Agency says.

The employee was reportedly a welder at the plant’s repair workshop, the IAEA said in a post on X on Thursday.

Any attack on nuclear power plant staff was unacceptable, IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi said.

He called on the warring parties to exercise maximum restraint to prevent the risk of a nuclear accident.

The IAEA did not provide further details about the attack, including whether it was carried out by Russian or Ukrainian forces.

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, with six reactors, is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe.

It came under Russian control shortly after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine and has been struck multiple times since.

The reactors are shut down but must continue to be cooled.

The IAEA has a permanent team on site to monitor the situation.

In other attacks in Ukraine on Thursday, at least 20 people were killed, including 14 in a Russian drone attack on a railway station in Dnipro.

In Kiev, one person was killed as the capital was hit by Russian ballistic missiles late on Thursday, while two 15-year-old girls were killed in Chernihiv and three people were killed in Kremenchuk.

Ukraine has been defending itself against a large-scale Russian invasion since February 2022.
