Lives and properties are at risk north of the Kununurra townsite as firefighters battle an emergency-level bushfire on Saturday afternoon.

The fire was first reported at 7.35AM on Saturday but developed into a larger blaze by 2.30pm.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said residents in the Ivanhoe agricultural area, including Mulligans Lagoon Road and Weaber Plain Road south to the airstrip should evacuate immediately if the way was clear.

“If it is safe to do so, leave north or south along Weaber Plain Road,” they said.

“Do not wait and see, leaving at the last minute could put your life in danger.”

The fire was moving in a south-easterly direction and remained uncontained and uncontrolled by 2.30pm.

Separate bushfire watch and act warnings were in place north-east and south-west of the emergency zone, with people urged to be wary of ember attacks.

“Burning embers are likely to be blown around your home and could spark a fire,” DFES said.

“If your plan is to leave, leave now.”
