The makers of Ramayana: Part 1, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Yash, have warned of legal action against people recording the film in cinemas and circulating the footage online. In a notice shared on the film’s Instagram handle, the team said offenders could face criminal, civil and contempt proceedings without further notice.
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the mythological epic was released on November 5 and is nearing the Rs 200-crore mark at the Indian box office after drawing audiences in India and overseas. The film features Ranbir as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Goddess Sita and Yash as Ravana, while its second instalment is scheduled for release on Diwali 2028.

The legal notice said the makers were aware that unauthorised footage of Ramayana was being recorded inside theatres and later circulated on social media and messaging platforms.
“The Hon’ble Bombay High Court, by orders dated 2 November 2026 and 6 November 2026 in commercial IP suit (L) no. 37230 of 2026, has restrained all persons, known and unknown, from recording, uploading, sharing or otherwise communicating the film or any part of it without authorisation. Doing so is copyright infringement, a criminal offence punishable with imprisonment and fine under the Copyright Act, 1957, the Cinematograph Act, 1952, the BNS, 2023 and the IT Act, 2000, and a contempt of court,” part of the notice read.
The makers asked users to delete any content from the film that had already been posted. They said offenders would be reported to the authorities and the relevant platforms and could face criminal, civil and contempt proceedings without further notice.
Produced by Namit Malhotra and Yash, Ramayana: Part 1 also stars Ravie Dubey, Indira Krishna, Arun Govil, Vivek Oberoi, Sonal Jha, Lara Dutta, Kunal Kapoor, Rakul Preet Singh and Kajal Aggarwal, among others. Anupam Kher has voiced Jatayu in the film.
Sunny Deol was introduced as Lord Hanuman in the first film’s post-credit scene. His complete look will be unveiled in Ramayana: Part 2, which is set to arrive in cinemas on Diwali 2028.
As Ramayana: Part 1 approaches the Rs 400-crore mark globally, its makers have reiterated that recording, uploading or sharing any part of the film without authorisation could lead to legal proceedings.
