A group of Adam Selwood’s close friends – including a pair of his West Coast premiership teammates – have finished what he started, running the HBF Run for a Reason.
Selwood died suddenly last Saturday, aged 41, just over a week before he was supposed to complete a monster fundraising effort by completing the event’s half marathon.
Instead his friends shed sweat and tears, running in honour of the Eagles champion through the rain and Perth’s CBD streets on Sunday.
The group included 2006 premiership stars Drew Banfield and Quinten Lynch, as well as Eagles stars Brad Dalziell, Matt Rosa, Travis Gasper and Sharrod Wellingham.
Selwood’s close friend Mike Conneely, who was set to run the half-marathon alongside his great mate, shed tears and looked towards the heavens in moving scenes after crossing the finish line.
The campaign — which had reached $21,000 before Selwood died — climbed to more than $76,000 late on Sunday, with donations flooding in after the race.
Selwood was raising funds for Zero2Hero, a Perth-based youth mental health organisation. The charity’s chief executive Ashlee Harrison also ran the 12-kilometre event.
