In a purported case of honour killing, a 20-year-old girl was shot dead by her father in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior on Tuesday, i.e., January 14. 

The deceased, identified as Tanu Gurjar, openly declared love for her boyfriend days before her marriage. Sharing a video on social media, she said, “Hello! Mera naam Tanu Gurjar hai. Mere papa ka naam Mahesh Gurjar hai. Meri mummy ka naam Mamata Gurjar hai (Hello! My name is Tanu Gurjar. My father’s name is Mahesh Gurjar and my mother’s name is Mamata Gurjar). 

“Main Adesh Nagar, Gwalior ki Niwasi hoon. Main aapko batana chahti hoon ki main ek ladke se bahut pyaar karti hoon. Hum 6 saal se saath hain. Pehle mere gharwale humare rishte ke liye maan gaye the par baad mein mana kar diya” (I am a resident of Adesh Nagar, Gwalior. I want to tell you that I love a guy so much. We have been together for six years. Earlier, my parents accepted our relationship but now, they are refusing), she added. 

The deceased further detailed the harassment and assault she faced from her family for having displayed her opposition to the arranged marriage, which was scheduled to be held on January 18. 

“Agar mujhe kuchh huaa ya main mari, toh uske zimmedar mere gharwale honge. Kyunki woh daily pressure dalte hain kisi aur ke saath rehne. But main nahi reh sakti” (If something happens to me or if I die, my family will be responsible for that. They pressurise me everyday to live with someone else which I can’t), she said. 

As per a report by Times of India, Tanu had a heated argument with her father on Tuesday night, i.e., the day of the incident. In a fit of rage, he shot his daughter at a close range. 

Alerted by neighbours, the police arrived at the spot and arrested Mahesh. Further probe is underway into the matter.
