Headstands should be learned under supervision, especially for beginners. People with neck injuries, high blood pressure, glaucoma, or certain medical conditions should avoid them or consult a doctor/yoga therapist first. Performing headstands (also known as Sirsasana in yoga) can offer several physical, mental, and physiological benefits when practised correctly and safely.

Improves Blood Circulation to the Brain

When you perform a headstand, the body is inverted, allowing gravity to send more oxygen-rich blood to the brain. This enhanced circulation can improve mental clarity, focus, and alertness.

Builds Core and Upper Body Strength

Holding a headstand requires strong engagement from your core muscles, including the abs, obliques, and lower back, to maintain balance. Simultaneously, the shoulders, arms, and upper back work together to support and stabilise the body’s weight. This combination leads to improved muscular endurance and better posture.

Stimulates the Lymphatic System

The inversion created by a headstand helps stimulate the lymphatic system, encouraging the movement and drainage of lymphatic fluid. This process supports the body’s detoxification by removing waste products and toxins, boosting the immune response and promoting hormonal balance.

Reduces Stress and Anxiety

Being upside down has a calming effect on the nervous system, triggering the parasympathetic response that helps the body relax. This shift reduces levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, leading to a sense of mental stillness.

Improves Digestion and Metabolism

Headstands also benefit the digestive system by redirecting blood flow to the digestive organs, which can help them function more efficiently. This change in pressure can relieve common issues like bloating and constipation while also giving a gentle boost to metabolism and gut health.
