Alicia Walker intends to spend her first Mother’s Day as a mum overlooking the city from the rooftop of her Brunswick apartment with newborn baby Heath in her arms.

In Victoria, more than 21,000 babies have been born so far this year, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Walker intends to eat cake and drink coffee alongside her husband Tom and extended family, including her own mum, Jenni, while they officially celebrate Heath’s birth.
“Heath is my mum’s first grandchild, so she’s over the moon,” Walker says.
When Heath was born a little more than two weeks ago, the Geelong Cats theme song was blaring in the birthing suite.
The anesthetist put it on as Heath arrived in the world serene, with a full head of sandy blond hair, rosebud lips, and not much choice about his future AFL team.

“It was actually quite a funny moment,” Walker says.
“It was absolutely incredible. It is very surreal moment to see your baby for the first time. But I don’t think he’ll get much choice about who he barracks for.”
Within moments, Heath was in his white swaddle and wrapped in a Geelong scarf, which is fitting given most of Walker’s family are mad Cats supporters.

“It made the moment pretty special for all of us,” Walker says.
The psychologist says the days that followed have been a blur of cuddles and catching glimpses of Heath’s personality.
“It’s been total ups and downs since he was born, but mostly ups,” Walker says.
“It has been beautiful getting to know him. He just gazes into our eyes and makes little monkey noises.”
