70% of asthma cases in India remain undiagnosed, severely affecting patients’ quality of life
Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that causes inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to symptoms like wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. While it can be effectively managed with medication, over 34 million people in India suffer from asthma—contributing to 13% of the global burden. Unfortunately, various myths and misconceptions hinder timely diagnosis and treatment. Shockingly, 70% of asthma cases in India remain undiagnosed, severely affecting patients’ quality of life.

One of the major barriers to diagnosis is the lack of awareness about common asthma triggers, which include pollution, pollen, dust mites, cold air, and respiratory infections—particularly during seasonal changes in India.
With an abundance of information available online, it is essential to debunk common myths and share life-saving facts with the public:
Myth: Asthma is seen only in children
Fact: Asthma can develop at any age. Many adults acquire asthma due to pollution, allergens, or occupational exposure.
Myth: Inhalers are harmful or can cause addiction
Fact: Inhalers, when used as prescribed by a doctor, are safe and non-addictive. They should be used with a spacer to ensure that most of the medication reaches the lungs.
Myth: Asthma is a psychological condition
Fact: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the lungs. While stress can worsen symptoms, it is not a psychological or mental condition.
Myth: A healthy diet can cure asthma
Fact: A balanced diet can boost immunity and reduce the risk of infections that may trigger asthma attacks. However, inhaled corticosteroids and bronchodilators remain the gold standard for treatment.
Myth: Asthma attacks are sudden and unavoidable
Fact: Asthma attacks can be prevented with timely diagnosis, regular medication, and by avoiding known triggers.
Myth: People with asthma should avoid physical activity
Fact: Exercise can be beneficial when incorporated into a well-structured asthma management plan. Footballer David Beckham is a powerful example that asthmatic individuals can achieve great success in sports.
Myth: Asthma is contagious
Fact: Asthma is not contagious and cannot be transmitted from person to person.
Proper asthma management includes consistent use of prescribed medication and avoiding triggers. Complementary practices such as yoga, meditation, and dance can further support asthma management—yoga improves lung capacity, meditation helps reduce stress, and dance boosts cardiorespiratory health. Together, these approaches enable individuals to lead active, empowered lives.
By replacing myths with knowledge, we can reduce stigma, improve care, and help millions across India breathe freely and live fully.
