Dedicated bookworms braved the outdoors and camped out overnight in order to get their hands on the latest instalment in a popular fantasy book series.

Dozens of fans took to the streets to line up for Rebecca Yarros’ latest book, Onyx Storm, on Monday night.

Video footage captures the moment fans, armed with blankets to rest on, set up camp outside Dymocks on George St in Sydney to purchase the sequel of bestsellers Fourth Wing, and Iron Flame.

Staff clapped as the doors opened at midnight, with happy book lovers sporting Fourth Wing totes checking out the new book as more staff members unpacked copies straight from boxes on the shop floor to meet the demand.

“We marked the release at our Sydney store on the stroke of midnight, joined by excited book lovers eager to grab one of the first copies in Australia,” Dymocks wrote on Instagram.

“Thanks to those that joined us for a fun night of all things dragons, music and mayhem.”

The series follows Violet Sorrengail, who’s ordered by her mother – a commanding general – to pursue becoming a dragon rider amid the kingdom’s raging war.

The fantasy series features the popular enemies-to-lovers trope highly sought after by the modern day book lover.

It’s also known for steamy scenes, with one Aussie grandma admitting the “sexy” scenes in Fourth Wing made it difficult to fall asleep.

“I always read when I go to bed and I’ve got to the spicy bits in chapter 30 onwards, and they don’t help you to sleep very well,” she said.

“It was very got me stirred up about the sexy stuff.”

82-year-old Glenda has taken the online romantasy (romantic fantasy) community by storm, with her hilarious reactions to the sexy literary hit ‘Fourth Wing’.

“Alliances will be forged. Lives will be lost. Traitors will become allies … or even lovers. But sleep with one eye open because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die,” a synopsis of Fourth Wing states on the Dymocks website.

“I have never been more excited,” one person commented on Dymocks’ post about the midnight release.

Others shared their enthusiasm by crafting a medical certificate requesting Tuesday off to “read and then process” the new book.

“As a result of this book’s publication day, the individual may or may not be suffering from: Lack of sleep from a compulsion to turn pages, Heightened blood pressure and/or shortness of breath due to any potential unexpected plot twists, A deep, painful feeling of emptiness once the book is complete,” the mock medical certificate, shared to a Facebook group dedicated to book lovers, stated.

Yarros, a 43-year-old American author, released Fourth Wing in April 2023.

It quickly shot to popularity on BookTok, a community of book lovers who share book recommendations and reviews on TikTok.
