Djokovic has objected to the organisers turning on the lights on Rod Laver Arena midway through their set.
Djokovic had a long chat with the chair umpire in Serbian before Faria came over, said he didn’t understand what they were saying.
The umpire asked the officials to turn off the lights until the end of the set.
Novak 1, Lights 0.
Faria leads 6-5 in the second set with Djokovic serving next.
UPDATED: Novak Djokovic has had a horrific second set which included him losing his cool in a very animated way.
But he is showing some fight and has just broken Faria as he was trying to serve for the set.
Djokovic won the first set 6-1 and Faria leads 5-4 in the second set with Djokovic about to serve.
Borges is taking his chances and leaving Jordan Thompson in his dust.
He now leads 6-3, 6-2 and Thompson is staring down the prospect of again missing the third round of the Australian Open.
As the commentators pointed out, Thompson has come back from two sets down before, but Borges doesn’t look in a generous mood today.
Never count Naomi Osaka out.
The former two-time Australian Open champion battled from a set down to claim a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Czechia’s Karolina Muchova.
Osaka had lost her past two matches against the Czech player, but dug deep to get the win today.
“Man, I mean, honestly, it took everything, I felt like I left everything I had on the court,” Osaka said.
“Last year was really tough for me, I felt like I could have done better, but just to be on these court and on these arenas, it makes my whole year. I’m glad I am able to play another round.”
It’s the first time she’s qualified for the third round of a slam since giving birth to her daughter, and on her way out of KIA Arena she left a little note for fans on the camera lens – ‘I love you Aus’.
Jordan Thompson is down a double break in the second set against Nuno Borges.
He’s trailing 3-6, 2-5 and Borges just played a sumptuous drop shot that left Thompson with no chance of getting to it.
Borges is serving for the second set.
That’s game, set and match for Carlos Alcaraz, with a 6-0, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka.
It was won and done in one hour and 21 minutes for Alcaraz, who looked like he had barely broken a sweat.
“I think less time you spend on the court at the grand slam, especially at the tournament, it’s good,” Alcaraz said.
“I’m really happy with the serve today. It’s something I worked in the preseason, and in the first round I struggled a little bit … I’m just glad today it worked pretty well.”
Alcaraz will next play the winner of the clash between Australian Jordan Thompson and Portugal’s Nuno Borges. Thompson is currently down a set at John Cain Arena.
Novak Djokovic has cruised through his first set against Jaime Faria, winning it 6-1.
We haven’t seen a repeat of the inconsistent play that saw Djokovic drop a set in the first round.
Nuno Borges has won the first set over Jordan Thompson.
The Portuguese star has looked much sharper than the Australian, but he hasn’t had everything his own way as Thompson fought of two break points at 2-5 down to hold his serve.
Borges took the set 5-3 but had to work for it with the game going to deuce.
Thompson has a big job ahead of him, but he’s come from behind before.
The Australian Open – the first major event of the calendar – has already broken attendance records.
Is it overtaking the spring racing carnival as the place to be, and to be seen?
See what these tennis fans have said.
Oh, how the tables turn.
After Karolina Muchova took the first set 6-1 against former two-time Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka, the Japanese star launched an epic comeback to snatch the second 6-1.
Osaka got the double break, and closed out the set with a swift service game, to send the match into a deciding third set.
Let’s hope for a battle in the third. My preference?
A 10-point tiebreak to decide the match – it seems only fitting.
