Ben Stiller has “discussed ” making a ‘Tropic Thunder ’ spin-off movie with Tom Cruise.
The 59-year-old professional starred in and directed the 2008 humorous comedy- which featured Cruise, 62, as the foul-mouthed studio executive Les Grossman- and has now revealed he has spoken with the ‘Mission: Difficult ’ star about probably making a spin-off for the character, while has insisted “nothing is in the works ” at the moment.
In an appointment with Extra, Stiller said: “There have been some exchanges about it over the years, yeah.
“Look, Tom Cruise — one of my favorite human people, one of our great film actors of all time — it would be fun, but there is nothing in the plays. However, it has previously been discussed. ”
In 2022, it was reported by Deadline that Cruise was considering making a ‘Tropic Thunder ’ spin-off with his ‘Top Gun: Maverick ’ director Christopher McQuarrie, though updates on the project have been scarce since.
‘Tropic Thunder ’- which even stars Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. follows a film crew forced to rely on their acting prowess to navigate a real war zone in Southeast Asia after the movie’s director ( Steve Coogan ) passes away in an accident.
While he believed ‘Tropic Thunder ’ would n’t make it past the “script phase” now, Stiller insisted he “would n’t not make it today”.
He added: “Somebody may be making films that are that out-there. If you can take those possibilities and it is clear where the prank is, I believe humor will get it. ”
Sicily, who plays the movie star Tugg Speedman in ‘Tropic Thunder, recently stated that it was unlikely the film may be produced immediately because “edgier humor is harder to perform ”.
When Collider asked if he could see ‘Tropic Thunder ’ coming out now, the ‘Zoolander ’ actor said: “ I doubt it. Naturally, in this environment, edgy comedy is only harder to do. In terms of the economy of the organization, it certainly not at the level we made it at, either.
“ I think even at the moment we were lucky to get it made, and I credit that, truly, to Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks. He read it and was like, ‘Alright, this make this thing. When you consider it, it’s a pretty insider film. ”
The ‘Severance ’ director pointed to Downey Jr. As one of ‘Tropic Thunder’s main points, producers would be quick to dismiss now, Kirk Lazarus, a white artist who has “pigmentation changes ” operation to temporarily darken his body for his description of the black figure.
He continued: “Yeah, the idea of Robert playing that figure who’s playing an American British character, I mean, very tricky. Even at the moment, of training, it was difficult too. ”
Even so, the ‘Night at the Museum ‘ star added that the joke was made fun of the willingness of Hollywood actors to put their ethics aside in an effort to win awards and not to make fun of African Americans.
He continued,” The only reason we attempted it was because I believed the joke was very explicit about players trying to win prizes.”
“ But now, in this atmosphere, I don’t even know if I would have ventured to do it, to tell you the truth. I‘m being fair. ”
