A car has driven into a crowd in the Canadian city of Vancouver, killing “a number of people”, local police have said.

Vancouver Police said a driver was in custody with “multiple others” injured during the incident at a street festival on Saturday evening.

It is unknown how many people had been killed.

In a post on social media, Vancouver police said “a driver drove into a crowd at a street festival at E. 41st Avenue and Fraser” shortly after 8pm local time on Saturday (11am AWST Sunday).

“We will provide more information as the investigation unfolds,” a statement continued.

A group of pedestrians were reportedly hit by the car during the annual Lapu Lapu festival, a celebration of Filipino culture.
