Once the celiac disease develops, it rarely goes away, and the intestinal lining becomes inflamed, leading to further complications
You must have heard of several rare diseases, but have you heard of celiac disease? Many people suffer from this stomach condition without realising they have it. Even doctors often misdiagnose it!
The symptoms of celiac disease are common and similar to other digestive issues, such as indigestion, gas, bloating, constipation, and diarrhoea. This disease often goes undetected because its symptoms appear, subside after a few days, and then recur. Genetics are primarily considered responsible for celiac disease.

Once the disease develops, it rarely goes away, and the intestinal lining becomes inflamed, leading to further complications.
What is celiac disease?
According to the Mayo Clinic, celiac disease usually affects individuals with specific genetic traits. The DQ2 and DQ8 genes are the primary culprits behind this condition. These genes are not present in everyone, but individuals who have them are predisposed to the disease.
Gluten intolerance can also trigger celiac disease. Some people are unable to tolerate gluten, and consuming gluten-containing foods leads to the onset of the disease. Even individuals with genetic defects can develop gluten intolerance, worsening the condition.
Celiac disease primarily causes damage to the intestinal walls, leading to inflammation and scratching of the lining. The intestinal lining acts as a protective shield for the intestines and plays a crucial role in digestion. When this lining is damaged, nutrient absorption becomes impaired, resulting in various health problems.
Symptoms of Celiac Disease
In the early stages, a few mild symptoms may appear in the patient, such as frequent bloating and diarrhoea, which can cause weakness. Persistent gas and constipation are also common. Lactose intolerance may develop, leading to severe stomach discomfort after consuming milk or dairy products. Patients may also experience abdominal pain, excessive bloating, and rapid weight loss due to impaired nutrient absorption.
What Happens If It’s Left Untreated?
The symptoms of celiac disease may disappear temporarily, leading many people to neglect proper treatment but this can be a critical mistake. Without treatment, the disease can lead to severe complications, such as:
- Anaemia due to iron deficiency
- Decreased bone density, resulting in brittle bones
- Skin rashes and mouth ulcers
- Persistent headaches and fatigue
- Joint pain and liver weakness
- Rapid and unexplained weight loss
Is There A Cure?
There is no permanent cure for celiac disease. However, if diagnosed early and managed effectively, the condition can be controlled to prevent further complications. Early intervention and consultation with a doctor are essential. Ignoring the disease or delaying treatment will only worsen the situation over time.
