To promote the use of public transport, the Delhi government has announced a travel allowance incentive for its employees who commute using the common mobility card on Delhi Metro and DTC buses, officials said on Tuesday.

The move is part of the government’s broader push to encourage fuel conservation and reduce pollution amid concerns over fuel supply due to the ongoing crisis in West Asia.

According to a Finance Department order, employees of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) who spend at least 25 per cent of their monthly transport allowance (excluding Dearness Allowance) on purchasing or recharging a common mobility card will be eligible for an additional incentive equivalent to 10 per cent of their admissible transport allowance. The amount will be paid along with their salary.

The order stated that the scheme aims to support the use of public transport while advancing the government’s efforts towards fuel conservation and pollution control.

The announcement follows Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s launch of the 90-day ‘Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdan’ fuel-saving campaign last month, which encouraged Delhi government employees to work from home for two days a week and use public transport wherever possible.

In a related measure, the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) had also announced special bus services for government employees, connecting their residential areas with nearby metro stations and the Delhi Secretariat.

The order further said that employees will be issued common mobility cards by DTC, subject to their consent and in accordance with guidelines framed by the Finance Department in consultation with the transport body.

The incentive scheme will initially remain in force for six months and may be extended after a review of its effectiveness, the order added.
