This new study expands the known benefits of green tea, revealing that it may also play a crucial role in promoting brain health. While its role in weight management is well-established, this research highlights green tea’s potential in protecting cognitive function and preventing age-related mental decline.
Consuming tea can benefit brain health by reducing the occurrence of cerebral white matter lesions. As people age, the brain may experience issues like these lesions, which are often linked to small vessel diseases. These conditions are associated with cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s, and vascular dementia. The American Brain Foundation explains that small vessel diseases occur when arteries in the brain narrow due to inflammation or the accumulation of misfolded proteins. Additionally, the study examined the size of the hippocampus, a key brain region responsible for memory.
What is the recommended amount to consume?
The study’s results revealed that people who consumed green tea had fewer white matter lesions in their brains. After analyzing the data, researchers recommended a specific amount of green tea intake. Participants who drank 600 ml of green tea daily showed 3percrent less brain damage (white matter lesions) than those who consumed 200 ml or less. This suggests that drinking about three cups of green tea a day could be beneficial. The study also noted that green tea is rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, particularly epigallocatechin gallate, which may help reduce vascular damage in the brain.
Interestingly, the study also included coffee in its comparison, and the results showed that coffee did not have a significant impact on reducing white matter lesions, unlike green tea. This finding provides an additional reason to consider switching from coffee to green tea, as it offers more potential health benefits for brain health.
