After his conviction in the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy claimed before the court that he is being “falsely implicated” in the case.

After his conviction in the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy claimed before the court that he is being “falsely implicated” in the case. 

“I have been falsely implicated. I have not done this. Those who have done so are being let go. One IPS involved,” he was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Sanjay Roy was arrested on August 11, after he was captured on CCTV camera entering the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College where the doctor was raped and later murdered. 

Earlier today, the Sealdah sessions court found Roy guilty in the case. However, his punishment will be announced on Monday, January 20. The court also told the convict that he would be heard on Monday. 

“The accused will be heard on Monday. Now he is being sent to judicial custody. His punishment will be announced on Monday. I have fixed the time at 12:30 to hear the case,” said the judge. 

Notably, Sanjay Roy was charged under Sections 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) which governs rape, and Sections 66 and 103 (1) of the Act, which deals with punishment for murder.

Victim’s parents break down before court

The parents of the deceased victim broke down before the court and thanked the judge, after the judgement was pronounced.

In the early hours of August 9, a trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata, which led to a nationwide outrage and protests.
