In wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, India may announce the cessation of ceasefire in days to come. New Delhi is “seriously considering” this as Pakistan has been unable to oblige with its commitments along the Line of Control and International Border, top government sources told CNN-News18.

According to the sources, India is taking this tough stand because of Pakistan’s failure to curb cross-border terrorism despite repeated commitments. This move can further isolate the neighbouring country, and this will be in response to Islamabad’s duplicity, the sources said.

Despite a ceasefire agreement made in February 2021, Pakistan-based terror groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), and The Resistance Front (TRF) continue to infiltrate Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan has also violated ceasefire with sniper attacks and shelling, and these incidents have increased between 2023 and 2024.

The sources told CNN-News18 that the topmost security apparatus is fully prepared for an end to ceasefire and capable of handling repercussions, if any. India has every right to secure its borders and civilians, and a decision will be taken in that regard, they said.

They further said the latest terror strike in Pahalgam highlights Islamabad’s failure to dismantle the terror infrastructure. Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) also remains committed to providing logistical support, training, and safe haven to militants, they added.

Pakistan has repeatedly violated commitments made to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and international partners to crack down on terror financing, the sources said. Groups like the LeT/TRF are openly operating under new names, they said.

The two officials held discussions over the existing mechanism of hotline contact and agreed to address core issues and concerns that can disturb peace and lead to violence. They reviewed the situation along the LoC and all other sectors.
