Kolkata Police on Wednesday busted an online illegal betting racket on the day India beat England by 7 wickets at the city’s Eden Gardens Cricket Stadium in the 1st T20I, officials said.

Acting upon a tip-off by informers, the Kolkata Police conducted raids in the city and arrested two men, who were running an online betting racket from inside a shop, they added.

The two arrested accused have been identified as 44-year-old Punam Verma and 48-year-old Ramesh Kumar Verma and were arrested from inside the shop named and styled as Riddhi Siddhi Assay Centre while they were running a cricket betting racket using online betting mobile apps during the ongoing India vs England T20I tournament.

During the operation, police recovered two mobile phones, each containing several betting users ids, one television and cash valued at Rs 30,000 from the possession of the accused.

Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and the West Bengal Gambling and Prize Competitions Act, 1957.

Further investigations are underway and efforts are also on to ascertain if more people are involved in the racket.
