A sessions court in Kolkata’s Sealdah will on Saturday pronounce its verdict in the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which led to nationwide outrage and prolonged protests by hundreds of people.
Sanjoy Roy, who was a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was charged with committing the crime on the doctor at the seminar hall of the state-run hospital on August 9 last year.

The judgment will be delivered 57 days after the trial commenced before the court of additional district and sessions judge, Sealdah court, Anirban Das.
Here’s a timeline of the RG Kar rape and murder case which shook the nation:
August 9: The semi-naked body of the trainee doctor was found on the third floor of the seminar hall of the state-run hospital in north Kolkata.
August 10: Kolkata Police take accused Sanjoy Roy into custody. This was when the first protest by doctors broke out across West Bengal.
August 12: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee gave Kolkata Police a seven-day deadline to solve the case or else she would hand it over to the CBI. RG Kar principal, Sandip Ghosh, meanwhile, stepped down amid protests.
August 13: The Calcutta High Court took note of the matter and termed the case “extremely gruesome”. It urged the protesting doctors to resume service. The NHRC also took notice of the matter.
Ordering former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh to take an extended leave, the High Court transferred the case to the CBI, citing no progress. The CBI take the accused into their custody.
August 14: A CBI team comprising 25 members was formed to investigate the case along with a forensic team. Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee announced a protest rally.
August 14: Hundreds of students, people and civil society organisations called for ‘Reclaim the night’ and protested against the heinous crime by taking to the streets.
August 15 midnight: A mob stormed the RG Kar hospital on Independence Day, vandalising the emergency department and nursing station. IMA called for a nationwide withdrawal of services for 24 hours on August 17.
August 16: Police arrested over 19 people on vandalism charges.
August 18: While taking note of the incident, the Supreme Court posted the matter for hearing on August 20.
August 19: The CBI questioned Sandip Ghosh in the rape-murder case. The central agency was granted permission to conduct a polygraph test on the accused and passed it through court.
August 20: A Supreme Court bench presided by then Chief Justice DY Chandrachud constituted a 10-member task force to formulate a national protocol to ensure the safety and security of doctors. The top court also directed the West Bengal government and Kolkata Police to submit a status report.
August 21: The Centre directed the central forces to take over the security of RG Kar hospital. Meanwhile, Kolkata police suspended three officers over vandalism.
August 24: Lie detection tests were conducted on the main accused, along with six others.
August 25: The CBI raided the residence of Sandip Ghosh, ex-deputy Sanjay Vashisth and 13 others.
August 26: Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj announced the Nabanna Abhijan march on August 27 and sought Mamata Banerjee’s resignation.
September 2: The CBI arrested Sandip Ghosh on September 2 in connection with alleged financial fraud at RG Kar hospital during his tenure.
September 14: The CBI again arrested Sandip Ghosh and a Kolkata police officer, Abhijit Mondal, over delays in the registration of FIR and missing evidence in the rape and murder case.
October 3: Doctors from the West Bengal Junior Doctors Front sat on a hunger strike in Kolkata demanding justice for the trainee doctor, and safety and security for the medical professionals.
October 7: The CBI filed a chargesheet against accused Sanjoy Roy in the case.
October 21: After a long-overdue meeting with Mamata Banerjee, the protesting doctors ended their 17-day hunger strike.
November 4: Charge framed by CBI against Sanjoy Roy at Sealdah court.
November 11: Trial began at Sealdah court.
November 12: A delay in filing the chargesheet resulted in bail being granted to the accused in the case, including Abhijit Mondal and Sandip Ghosh. The in-camera trial in the rape and murder case commenced on November 12.
November 29: The CBI filed a 125-page chargesheet in the RG Kar financial irregularities case and Sandip Ghosh was named in the case.
January 18, 2025: Sealdah court to give its verdict in the case.
