Tom Green gets in on the action
Oh dear.
It’s straight out of the guts again. Callaghan to Green to Briggs to Bedford to Green and Green hooks it through on the right.
We’re out to 53 points.

Greene has his second and it’s getting ugly
It’s straight out of the middle and the Brent Daniels kick inside 50 is perfect to the running skipper.
He has his second … and let’s not even bother doing another post because now Jake Riccardi has one as well.
Straight out of the guts again via some lovely ruckwork and the Eagles can’t get their hands on the ball.
Giants lead by 47 with 16:45 still on the clock in the second term.

Hogan has his third to start the second
The big fella with the twinkle toes clunks a big mark against the debutant Sandy Brock and he boots his third of the game.
That’s a really tough ask for the kid, because the ball is moving in clean and fast.
Great start by the Giants.
QT: GWS Giants (36) lead West Coast 1.1 (7)

This very much looks like a game between a team pushing for a flag and a team rebuilding from scratch.
The Giants have been fluid and clean with the ball, while the Eagles are making really basic foot skill errors in the worst part of the field.
They’ve given away 19 turnovers and are disposing at just 65%, and those poor kicks have been happening as much in their D50 as they have anywhere else on the field.
Toby Greene and Tom Green lead the disposals for the game with nine each, while Darcy Jones and Jesse Hogan both have two majors to their name.
Three Eagles are yet to touch the ball while another three have had just the one disposal.

Hogan gets a push and goals
Tom Cole grabs Jesse Hogan’s arm and impedes his run at the ball, and the big Giant gets the free kick near the top of the square.
It’s a goal, and it feels like the Eagles are out of their depth here.

Greene gets on the end of another horror turnover
The defensive kicking from the Eagles has been less than good and Tyrell Dewar just took year’s off the coach’s life with this kick.
He goes across the D50 and just misses everything, landing directly in Toby Greene’s hands.
Greene waltzes in, baulks one, and kicks the goal.
Disposal efficiency is just 66% for the Eagles right now.

Eagles are on the board via Archer Reid
It’s a really strong contested mark from the youngster after a chaos high ball from Oscar Allen.
He wrestles the more mature Jack Buckley and does more than hold his own, clunking the chest mark just outside the goalsquare.
He coverts and it’s back to 16 points.

Hogan stretches the lead for GWS
It’s just a high hoof into the F50 for Jesse Hogan and the big fella clunks it easily.
The set shot is arrow straight and the Eagles have no answers here.

Jones goes back-to-back
Toby Greene is involved again with a ripper of a kick to Darcy Jones off the outside of the boot.
Jones converts truly and they look smooth right now.
Their intercept marking across D50 has been elite early.

Early touch for Sandy Brock
It’s an AFL debut today for Sandy Brock after spending three years on the Gold Coast rookie list without playing a game.
And there’s some sporting blood running through those veins, with uncle Peter an absolute Australian motorsport legend.
Brock took a nice defensive mark early to get those nerves out of the system.

GWS draws first blood via Darcy Jones
It’s back and forth in the first two and a half minutes, but Darcy Jones breaks the game open down the wing with a lovely run and kick to Toby Greene.
Greene plays and on and shouldn’t have, because he’s under immediate pressure, but the hurried kick finds Jake Stringer’s hands, which tap it down to Jones on the run.
Jones snaps and snaps truly.

We are underway in the Giants vs Eagles clash
It’s an interesting line up for the Eagles, with Harley Reid starting on the halfback line.
Does that mean he’ll stay there? Probably not but it is interesting seeing him not in the guts.

Time for the review system?
Might be time to bring in decision reviews by a team captain similar to cricket and many other sports . Say 2 per quarter or 6 a game. Rankine obviously would have paid mark or free on review.
– Phillip
Interesting call from ABC Sport reader Phillip. Is it time to bring in a review system? Or would it slow the game down too much?

GWS Giants v West Coast Eagles teams

Here are the teams as listed on the AFL site. As mentioned, Xavier O’Halloran will be the sub for the Giants, and Hamish Davis is the sub for the Eagles.
Stephen Coniglio is listed as an emergency but he won’t be playing, he has a ‘glute irritation’ which translates to a pain in the proverbial.
Late change for the Giants
And it’s a big one for GWS.
Stephen Coniglio has been sidelined and replaced in the team by Callum Brown.
Xavier O’Halloran is the sub for the Giants, and Hamish Davis is the sub for the Eagles.
AFL says Izak Rankine decision was wrong
Now if you happened to miss every bit of footy news yesterday via a mate’s wedding or a kid’s birthday or any other reason for living your best life, you would have missed the drama around the non-call on Izak Rankine.
Popular opinion was that he should have either been awarded a mark or a free kick, that would have given him a late shot on goal to potentially take the lead.
And the AFL this morning has agreed.
“With 1.44 remaining in the Gold Coast v Adelaide match Rankine should have been awarded a mark,” a spokesperson said.
“Subsequently, he was also held in the marking contest, which should have also warranted a free kick. Upon review, the umpires missed it in real time.
“The AFL football department has contacted Adelaide this morning.”
So there it is, the Crows have been robbed again.
Today’s AFL games and what time they start
As mentioned below, we’ve got three games across the country today:
- GWS Giants v West Coast Eagles at 1:10pm (AEST), 11:10am in Perth
- Port Adelaide v St Kilda at 3:20pm (AEST), 2:50pm in Adelaide
- Fremantle v Western Bulldogs at 5:10pm (AEST), 3:10pm in Perth
(Note that the original post had times listed in AEDT because the news that daylight savings had finished had not reached Brisbane this morning. Any politician promising daylight savings for Queensland has my vote).
