Live: Matildas re-take the lead in frenetic Mexico rematch

Lovely football again from the Matildas.

Caitlin Foord is being triple-teamed on the edge of the penalty area, leaving Wheeler free to fire in a low shot from the left edge of the penalty area.

But a really good save from Barreras denies Wheeler a goal.

The corner finds its way to Wheeler too, but she can’t direct it on target.

Kennedy blasts over from outside the box as the Matildas go coast-to-coast from Arnold’s clearance.

Nice slick play by the Matildas, Mary Fowler with the past pass.

Mexico fashion an opportunity that sees Alexia Delgado send a weak effort towards Arnold from the edge of the penalty area.

Again, it’s a very weak shot, not testing either side of the keeper when a bit of width would surely have caused some consternation.

Ordóñez then goes down off the ball, not sure what happened there, but she flew across the screen after Arnold cleared.

It was Kennedy with a fierce block on Ordóñez as she raced towards Arnold.

Brilliant from the Matildas!

After Caitlin Foord appears to be fouled on the edge of the penalty area as she races forward, the ball falls to Ellie Carpenter on the right.

She drives to the line and crosses to Sam Kerr.

Kerr’s first-time shot hits the post and then hits the back of the diving Esthefanny Barreras, hits her back and goes in.

An unfortunate own goal on paper, but that was all Kerr and Carpenter.

The back passes have been very poor from the Matildas.

However, despite her struggles, she does brilliantly as the Mexicans look to break, making a brilliant one-on-one tackle.

Again from the left, Nicolette Hernández crossing from very deep to Jasmine Casarez, who beats Torpey to the ball and heads just wide.

She probably should have at least tested Arnold there, who was scrambling across well to cover that far post.

Wini Heatley is not having a good game.

She sends a hospital pass to Kennedy out from the back, with Kennedy instantly dispossessed by Alexia Delgado.

Delgado looks up and spots Arnold off her line, chipping a lovely effort that sails just over the bar.

Not great defensively from the Matildas here.

Pressure from Diana Ordóñez forces Arnold to pass the ball out wide to Heatley.

She is closed down and overrun by Nicolette Hernández, who crosses back to Ordóñez who slots home.

Great finish.

Horrible defending.

The left wing strides forward and shoots from inside the penalty area where Barreras makes a strong stop with her feet.

Raso is there to contest the rebound but the Mexican defence clears.

That’s straight off the training ground for the Matildas.

A short corner to Fowler on the right, she gives the ball to Wheeler.

Her chipped cross is sent back to the area in front of the penalty spot, where Kennedy spots the spinning, bouncing ball, controls, turns and pokes home past the Mexican defence.

That is the first international goal the Mexicans have conceded since May 2025, 12 games ago.

That was nicely done by the Matildas after a very shaky start down their left side of defence.

The Mexicans send a raking long ball to the right corner pocket for Nicolette Hernández to chase.

The Mexicans spend some time building around the edge of the box before Reyes shoots from the edge of the penalty area.

It’s blocked though and the Matildas force the white shirts of Mexico back.

Mary Fowler has the ball on the edge of the penalty area and shoots powerfully towards goal, but the Mexico defence holds firm.

It was lovely build up play there from Australia, Wheeler, Kerr, Foord and Carpenter all linking up at times to create space and pressure the edge of the penalty area.

It was perfect interplay and gave Fowler that chance to shoot.

Oh Wini Heatley what are you doing?!

She is pressurised by Nicolette Hernández and passes the ball blind back towards Arnold, the ball being cut out by Delgado instead.

Arnold manages to force her Mexican rival wide enough and the change is spurned.

But Wini Heatley has to switch on a bit at the moment because she’s made three errors now.

Wini Heatley has not had a good start to the game – the Mexican press this time causing her to find a Mexican shirt instead of a Matildas teammate.

The Tillies do clear though – but that’s a warning shot for the Matildas defence to clue up a bit about where they’re passing the ball.

Kerr pounces on a weak back pass and challenges Esthefanny Barreras for the ball on the edge of her six yard box!

The Mexican keeper does well though, great composure and strength there to pass the ball out of danger.

The Matildas press has been good so far, Mexico are not getting any chance to breath in their own half of the field at the moment.

The pops up as the Matildas challenge on the edge of the penalty area.

Sam Kerr instantly appeals and there was a case for there being a free kick given there for the Matildas – the arm was up from the Mexican defender.

But it was outside the penalty area.

Straight up the other end for the Matildas.

Kennedy wins the ball on the edge of the penalty area and it squirts through to Foord, who shoots on the turn first time and just misses past the right post.

Diana Ordóñez should have done better.

It was a horror pass from Wini Heatley that was picked up by Alexia Delgado.

She laid the ball off to Ordóñez, who had time to pick her spot, but could only send a tame effort to the chest of Makenzie Arnold.

The Matildas are starting brightly at the start of this match, Mary Fowler involved plenty in the opening exchanges as the Matildas camp on the edge of the Mexico box.

Caitlin Foord managed a lovely mazy run before finding Carpenter, whose cross was beyond anyone in the box.

Mexico can’t handle it though and the ball finds its way to Torpey, whose cross to Kerr is a good one, but her header flies wide.
