An “aggressive” man has been posing as a mechanic around shopping centres, trying to swindle potential customers out of hundreds of dollars with a service deal too good to be true.
Matt Aust said he was approached on Friday between 6pm and 6.30pm in the Melville Plaza carpark by a man who claimed to be a Myaree Tyre and Mechanical staffer, offering to service two cars for $140.
“But he pulls out an eftpos machine and insists you pay straight away,” Mr Aust shared on social media.
“When we said no… he became extremely aggressive and was trying to prevent us from leaving.”
Myaree Tyre and Mechanical told The West Australian they were aware of the impersonator and confirmed he does not work for the company.
Palmyra Police investigating last Friday’s incident are appealing for information about the man.
“A person was approached in the carpark of a shopping centre on Canning Highway by a man wearing a high visibility vest offering a discount vehicle service,” a police spokesperson said.
“It is alleged that the man fraudulently represented he was from a tyre and mechanical business.
“Inquiries are ongoing.”
Mr Aust’s online recount brought out other similar stories from the area, including a Moncrieff Realty employee who believed the same man had been in their Attadale office earlier the same day.
“He came into our business Friday he was so rude shouting and swearing when we said no thank you,” she commented on Mr Aust’s social media post.
Others suggested the man had approached people near Myaree IGA, in the Bicton McDonald’s carpark, in the Westfield Booragoon food court and at Bunnings Melville with the discount deal.
