According to CNBC, the layoffs are unrelated to employee performance. A Microsoft spokesperson stated that the decision is part of an organizational reshaping strategy: “We continue to implement organizational changes necessary to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace.”

The job cuts affect all levels, teams, and regions, reflecting a company-wide shift. While Microsoft has not specified which roles are being eliminated, it emphasized the importance of staying agile and competitive amid rapid changes driven by AI, cloud technologies, and evolving customer demands.

Affected Employees Include 18-Year Old Employee And AI Director

Ron Buckton, a former Microsoft employee who was recently laid off, shared a heartfelt post on X. He had been with Microsoft for over 18 years, spending nearly a decade working on TypeScript. “After 18 years at Microsoft, including roughly ten years on TypeScript, I was unfortunately let go in the latest round of layoffs,” he wrote.

“I need to take a few days to process before I start looking for work. Thanks to everyone who’s been part of my journey so far,” he added.

Another engineer, Gabriela de Queiroz, who served as the Director of AI at Microsoft, also shared on X that she was affected by the recent layoffs.

According to Layoffs.fyi, a website that tracks layoffs in tech world, a total of 59,413 tech employees have been laid off so far in 2025 in the 127 tech companies with the latest round by Microsoft.
