In what local residents and officials are calling a landmark event, a passenger bus rolled into a remote Naxal-affected village in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district for the first time since Independence.

Katejhari, a tribal village in Gadchiroli district, will now have public transport as the state-run bus recently reached the village. The historic initiative aims to improve access to healthcare, education, economic opportunities, and overall development in the area.

Internet users called it a milestone for the isolated and inaccessible village, praising the Narendra Modi-led government’s efforts to root out Naxalism from this region and bring it into the mainstream. Many shared videos of the bus making its entry into the village with local residents describing it as “more than just a convenience”.

Village residents celebrated the arrival of the bus and said this was the first time since 1947 that their village has been connected by public transport.

According to a report published by The Hindu, local officials said the new bus service is a critical step towards development in the Naxal-affected region. They said the service is a gateway to opportunity.

“This is not just a bus, but a means of development for the people of this village, as well as for residents of around 10 nearby villages who can avail education and employment from it,” Jagdish Pandey, sub-divisional police officer, told The Hindu.

Only a few days ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated the central government’s commitment to establishing peace in Naxal-affected areas and connecting them with the mainstream of development after Union Home Minister Amit Shah shared the success of an anti-Maoist operation on the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border. He said the success of the security forces shows that the campaign towards rooting out Naxalism is moving in the right direction.
