Located in the heart of Delhi, this vinyl bar transports people to an era when music was more than just a sound in your earphones.

The bar features curated playlists and piquant European cuisine for a memorable experience.

The way we listen to music is always evolving. However, the one thing that remains constant in this ever-changing landscape is its ability to make us mortals feel seen and heard. Knowing that someone else in this chaotic world, even if it’s a century ago, has grappled with the same emotions provides a sense of comfort that is unmatched.

As someone who spent her adolescent years glued to her iPod, shuffling between bops, I never knew the feeling that comes with building your record collection. For me, adding a song to my playlist was the norm, which eventually led to my favourite tracks being lost among a sea of sound.

So, when I came across Genre – the first vinyl bar in my city, Delhi, it piqued my interest, to say the least. I had never experienced my favourite tunes in such an intense way beyond the screen before. Located in the heart of Delhi, what made Genre stand out was not only its cozy interior or the piquant European cuisine, but also how the restaurant allowed people a glimpse into the past, a time when music was more than just a sound in your earphones, when putting on your favourite song required effort and slowing down, thereby enriching the emotional experience.

Co-founder Kunal Singh Chhabra opened up about what he believes made Genre work in an era where tangibility is fading: “YouTube and Spotify are something that everyone on the planet can use, but vinyl records are not common. They continue to be a collector’s item, and people have always leaned towards something more exclusive.”

Furthermore, what put the record bar on the map is its unique collection of records, where every week there’s a new melody waiting to be discovered. Each playlist is curated with immense attention to detail by Utkarsh, the resident vinyl selector, and a network of selectors across the city, leaving room for endless possibilities and tunes!

Moreover, every nook of the carefully curated space was straight out of a melophile’s dream, with records from hitmakers like Tame Impala to Boney M. sitting on the shelves, waiting to transport you back to your favourite era of music, while the beverages named after artists made the experience, a one to remember.

Ultimately, in a world of constant streaming, stepping into Genre felt like entering a sensory capsule, away from the algorithm, where every track is not just another calculated recommendation, but a place where every note invites you to pause, listen, and truly feel the sound.
