Perth will sweat through its third heatwave of summer with temperatures expected to soar into the 40s across this week.

People in Perth’s eastern suburbs and in the Wheatbelt are expected to face severe to extreme heatwave conditions, with daytime temperatures unlikely to drop below the high 30s for most of the week.

The mercury is expected to peak in Perth on Monday at 43 degrees, while parts of the Wheatbelt will swelter through temperatures of up to 45 degrees.

A chance of thunderstorms on Tuesday and Wednesday is expected to bring prolonged tropical-like humid conditions for Perth until after the long weekend, with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services issuing a heatwave advice, urging people to take care in the severe heat and watch for signs of dehydration and heat stress.

Bureau of Metrology spokesman Luke Huntington said WA had experienced a high number of severe heatwaves this summer.

He said for a heatwave to last up to seven days was unusual.

“With this heatwave being the third it is higher than normal. The record number of severe heatwaves for Perth was eight in 2007,” he said.

“Extreme heatwaves are rare in Perth and have only happened twice, the last being in December 2021.

“Much of the time a heatwave will only last three days in Perth, so for it to last nearly seven days is quite unusual.”

Premier Roger Cook urged people to take care throughout the heatwave.

“We’re expecting high temperatures in the high 30s and early 40s throughout the week in metropolitan Perth,” Premier Cook said.

“So everyone, please take the opportunity to look after yourselves… take extra care if you know of a vulnerable member of the community, it might be a family member or a next door neighbour, please just check in on them throughout the week, make sure they’re doing okay in these high temperatures.”
