Starting a family and raising a child is a cherished dream for many couples. However, due to various medical conditions, some are unable to conceive naturally. In such cases, legal adoption offers a meaningful path to parenthood, with a structured process in place under government supervision.
Speaking to Local18, former chairman of the Botad Child Welfare Committee in Gujarat, Piyushbhai Shah, shared detailed insights into the legal procedures involved in adopting a child.

“Today, due to the widespread use of chemicals and adulteration in food products, both men and women face increasing fertility issues, resulting in many couples remaining childless. These couples often turn to adoption to fulfil their desire for a family,” he explained.
Legal Procedure
As per the official protocol, abandoned children, those whose biological parents are unknown, are placed in child care centres, where they are nurtured until eligible for adoption. Typically, younger couples are considered for younger children, while older couples may be matched with older children.
To initiate the process, couples must submit a formal application. In India, the State Adoption Resource Agency (SARA) and the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) oversee the legal framework of adoption. Applicants are screened, and necessary documentation is completed based on the couple’s age and child preference.
Adoptions carried out outside of this legal framework are deemed invalid. The law mandates that all adoptions must be processed through these recognised authorities to ensure transparency and the welfare of the child.
